Kynoch Shield - County Final

16th February 2020

Bideford’s A team narrowly missed out to Okehampton in the County Final of the Kynoch Shield on Sunday, losing by just one point.

The Kynoch Shield is an annual intercounty event between Devon and Cornwall, and teams from clubs in each county qualify to represent their county by a knock-out competition during the winter season.   Each club team is six shooters, each of whom have to nominate a “start” figure and then try to achieve a score which, when added to that start, gives a total of 100;   for instance, if a start of 8 is chosen, the shooter attempts to score 92.

Bideford had entered two teams in this year’s competition, and in the semi-final county stage the B team missed out to Okehampton by the tightest of margins when graduated gauges had to be used to decide the winner.    The A team had easily beaten Pinhoe, and so came up against Okehampton in the county final on Sunday, which was shot at Pinhoe Smallbore Club near Exeter.

On the first detail (two shooters from each team) the Bideford team members, Mog Thomson and Yvonne Hoile, were each one away from their desired total, while the Okehampton pairing of Di Johnson and Ann Travis dropped one between them;  on the second detail Bideford’s Pete Thomson achieved his chosen start but John Hutchings was one short, while both Laurence Bennie and Andy Brown for Okehampton were spot on, leaving Okehampton two points ahead.  On the final detail, Bart Kelly for Bideford and Paul Batten for Okehampton each shot the score they needed, but with Adie Pile for Bideford dropping one point and Phil Martin for Okehampton dropping two, the victory went to Okehampton by just one point.

The Okehampton team will now go forward to meet the winning Cornwall team in the intercounty final at the end of March……..and try to retain the Kynoch Shield which Devon has won for the last five year…..all of these victories having been achieved by Bideford teams.

Working Party

October 2019

A disappointingly small number of members turned up to help with the working party today, which was such a shame as the weather was perfect and we should have been able to get a lot of jobs done.

However, we managed to trim the hedge, strim all the banks and the sides of the hedge and driveway, almost complete the weeding of the big bank, renew the elastic on the 25x boards, repair target frames and some of the boards and numbers, sort the brass empties ready for sale and a few other jobs.... so thank you to Andy D, Paul & Debbie, Pete, Yvonne, Mog, Linda, Stuart and Neil for all you did, as well as Adie for renewing the target lights at 25x.

There are a number of jobs still outstanding to get done before the winter, so please check the board in the set-up room and see if there is anything you can do to help.

Please also be aware that work on the path between the firing point and the 25x targets is still ongoing, so might be a bit muddy.

Five of our air gunners attended this inaugural event held at Braunton TSC.

Alex won air pistol

Marc, Sue, Amy & Sam won Bench rest team

Amy won the juniors

Great shooting guys.

RCOs Course

17th November 2019

Eleven members gave up their Sunday to come to a rather chilly Melbury today, to take the Range Conducting Officer Course, and I think most of them were surprised at the amount of content  -  it's not just sitting at the back of the range and stopping and starting the details!   All did well, and now just have to take a trial detail and also complete the course questionnaire before their qualification is confirmed.

So shortly we shall be able to add the names of Gerald Macarty, Linda Prior-Jolley, Sue Rudman, Debbie Davies, Paul Davies, Sam Bernard, Lorne Hamilton, Stuart Arnold, John Blaney, Naomi Ayre and Adie Pile to the club list of qualified RCOs, bringing our total number to well in excess of 30.

Thank you to you all for stepping up to do this, you will be an asset to the club.
